Invitation Timeline

Use this timeline to help you stay on track with your invitations and wedding stationery. The timeline is based on times before the event date. Be sure to check with your invitation provider to determine when you’ll need to order your invitations to avoid a rush fee.

7 months before your event*

  • Determine your invitation budget.
  • Decide what type of invitation and ensemble you can afford.
  • Prioritize the importance of each piece in your ensemble (if you could only have one, would you rather have menus or programs?)
  • Schedule an initial consultation with an invitation provider.
  • If ordering custom invitations, start the sample process with your designer.

5 to 6 months before your event

  • Finalize your guest list and determine the number of invitations that you will need.
  • Evaluate samples. Make changes. Sign contract and proofs and order invitations.

*If you are sending save-the-date cards, discuss these with your invitation provider as soon as possible and mail at least 6 months before the event.
